Have you ever copied text from a PDF, Word document, email, or website and found a new line after almost every few words? It can make a simple paragraph difficult to read and frustrating to edit.

With My Tool Club’s free Remove Line Breaks tool, you can clean up messy text in seconds. Replace line breaks with spaces, commas, or your own separator. Keep paragraph breaks when you need them, remove empty lines, and tidy up extra spaces.

Paste your text, choose how you want it cleaned, and click Clean Text Now. Review the result, copy it to your clipboard, or download it as a text file.

How to Use the Remove Line Breaks Tool

You don’t need to install anything or manually edit every line. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Paste your text. Copy the text you want to clean from a PDF, Word document, email, website, or another source and paste it into the Original Text box.
  2. Choose your settings. Decide whether to replace line breaks with spaces, commas, nothing, or a custom separator. You can also select additional text-cleaning options.
  3. Clean your text. Click the Clean Text Now button to apply your selected settings.
  4. Review the result. Check the Cleaned Text box to make sure the output looks right.
  5. Copy or download. Use Copy Result to copy the cleaned text or Download .txt to save it as a text file.

Your original text remains in the input box while you work, so you can adjust the settings and process it again without starting over.

Choose How to Remove Line Breaks

Different types of text need different kinds of cleanup. That’s why this line break remover gives you several ways to handle unwanted newlines.

1. Replace Line Breaks with Spaces

This is a good starting point for ordinary paragraphs.

When copied text contains a line break in the middle of a sentence, replacing it with a space joins the sentence without running the words together.

Before:

The quick brown fox
jumps over the lazy dog.

After:

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

Use this option for paragraphs copied from PDFs, articles, emails, and other documents where you want the text to read naturally.

2. Replace Line Breaks with Commas

Need to turn a list of separate lines into a comma-separated sequence? Use the comma replacement option.

Before:

Apples
Bananas
Oranges
Grapes

After:

Apples, Bananas, Oranges, Grapes

This can help when preparing lists for documents, spreadsheets, or other applications. Check the result before using it, especially when the original text already contains commas.

3. Remove Line Breaks Completely

Sometimes you need to remove newline characters without adding spaces or punctuation.

For example:

Before:

ABC
123

After:

ABC123

This option is useful when the line break itself is unwanted and the adjoining characters are supposed to form one continuous string.

Be careful when using it with normal sentences. Removing a line break without inserting a space can join two words together.

4. Use a Custom Separator

Want to separate lines with a vertical bar, slash, semicolon, or another symbol? Choose the custom replacement option and enter the text you want to insert between lines.

For example, you might turn a list into a sequence separated by vertical bars:

Before:

Red
Blue
Green

After:

Red | Blue | Green

Choose a separator that suits the application where you plan to use the cleaned text.

How to Remove Line Breaks Without Losing Paragraphs

Removing every line break can turn a well-organized document into one long block of text. In many cases, you only want to join the lines inside each paragraph while keeping the paragraphs themselves separate.

That’s what the Preserve Paragraphs option is designed to do.

Before:

The first paragraph starts here
and continues on the next line.

The second paragraph starts here
and continues on another line.

After:

The first paragraph starts here and continues on the next line.

The second paragraph starts here and continues on another line.

The tool uses blank lines in the input to recognize paragraph boundaries. If the original text does not contain clear blank-line separators, it may not be possible to identify every paragraph correctly without checking the result manually.

For most ordinary prose copied from a document, start with Replace with Space and Preserve Paragraphs. Review the output before copying it into your final document.

Clean Up Extra Spaces, Tabs, and Empty Lines

Sometimes the problem is more than unwanted line breaks. Copied text can also contain uneven spacing, empty lines, or invisible whitespace characters.

My Tool Club’s text-cleaning options help you handle several of these problems in one place.

Remove Empty Lines

Use this setting when your text contains unnecessary blank lines. It is useful for cleaning up long lists, copied notes, and text with too much empty space.

Trim Each Line

This option removes spaces and tabs from the beginning and end of each original line. It can help when copied text contains unwanted indentation or trailing whitespace.

Collapse Multiple Spaces

Repeated spaces can make text look uneven after line breaks have been removed. Enable this option to turn consecutive spaces or tabs into a single ordinary space, where applicable.

Normalize Non-Breaking Spaces

Some documents use non-breaking spaces that behave differently from ordinary spaces. This option converts those characters into regular spaces so that the text is easier to work with.

Replace Tabs with Spaces

Tabs can create unexpected gaps or indentation in pasted text. Use the tab-cleaning option to replace tab characters with spaces when that is the desired result.

Strip HTML Tags

If your copied text contains HTML markup such as paragraph or line-break tags, the HTML-tag option can remove that markup.

Keep in mind that removing HTML tags does not automatically preserve every formatting or paragraph boundary. Review the cleaned result before using it elsewhere.

Remove Line Breaks from PDF Text

Copying text from a PDF can be frustrating. A paragraph may look perfectly normal on the page, but when you paste it into a text editor, each line may appear separately.

This often happens because the extracted text reflects the document’s layout rather than the natural flow of its sentences.

To clean up copied PDF text:

  1. Select and copy the text from your PDF.
  2. Paste it into the Original Text box.
  3. Start with Replace with Space.
  4. Keep Preserve Paragraphs enabled when blank lines separate paragraphs.
  5. Click Clean Text Now and inspect the output.
  6. Copy the result into your document or download it.

This works well when unwanted newline characters interrupt otherwise readable text.

However, a PDF can introduce other problems, including broken words, misplaced spaces, and text extracted in the wrong order. Removing line breaks does not automatically correct every PDF formatting issue, so always check the final text.

Remove Line Breaks from Microsoft Word

If text copied from Word contains unwanted hard line breaks, you can paste it into the tool and join the lines using your preferred separator.

This may be helpful when preparing notes, cleaning up text copied from a document, or converting a list into a single line.

If you are working directly in Microsoft Word, Word’s Find and Replace feature is another option for handling specific types of line breaks. For more complicated documents, inspect the formatting before replacing breaks so that you do not accidentally remove paragraph boundaries or list structure.

Fix Words Split Across Lines

Text copied from a PDF sometimes contains a hyphen at the end of a line because a long word was divided to fit the page.

For example, the copied text might contain:

Before:

The exam-
ple is easy to understand.

Intended result:

The example is easy to understand.

The Fix Hyphenated Words option is intended to help with this type of issue. Use it carefully, since hyphens can also be part of legitimate words. Always check the result before using it in your final document.

Removing a line break is not the same as correcting a spelling or reconstructing missing text. Some copied documents need additional review.

Fix Capitalization, Punctuation, and Special Characters

After joining lines, you may want to tidy up the text further.

My Tool Club also includes optional text-cleaning controls for capitalization, punctuation spacing, smart quotes, and special characters.

  • Sentence Case: Changes text to sentence-style capitalization. Review names, acronyms, and other words that need specific capitalization.
  • Fix Punctuation Spacing: Adds spacing after common punctuation marks where needed.
  • Convert Smart Quotes: Changes curly quotation marks and apostrophes to straight equivalents.
  • Remove Special Characters: Removes characters outside the tool’s supported basic character set.

These are optional cleanup settings. They can be useful for plain English text, but they should not be applied blindly to every document.

For example, the special-character filter may remove accented letters, non-English characters, emoji, or symbols that are important to your content. Leave it disabled when you need to preserve those characters.

Likewise, review automatic capitalization and punctuation changes before using the result in academic work, code, legal documents, or other text where exact wording matters.

Line Breaks vs. Paragraph Breaks: What’s the Difference?

A line break moves text to the next line. A paragraph break marks the boundary between one paragraph and the next.

They can look similar when you are reading a document, but they serve different purposes.

A line break may occur because a line of text has wrapped or because a manual newline was inserted. A paragraph break usually indicates that a new thought or section has started.

When copying plain text, the distinction is not always preserved perfectly. A blank line is commonly used to represent a paragraph boundary.

That’s why Preserve Paragraphs is useful: it aims to join lines within paragraphs while retaining boundaries marked by blank lines.

If the text has no clear paragraph separators, inspect the result and restore any missing paragraph breaks where necessary.

Who Can Use This Line Break Remover?

This tool can help anyone who needs to clean up text before editing, sharing, or processing it.

  • Students: Clean up copied notes, reading material, and text extracted from PDFs.
  • Writers and editors: Join broken lines in drafts and make text easier to revise.
  • Office professionals: Tidy up copied emails, reports, and other documents.
  • Researchers: Prepare extracted text for reviewing or organizing information.
  • Developers: Remove newline characters from text strings when continuous text is needed.
  • Data and spreadsheet users: Convert lines into comma-separated or custom-separated text when appropriate.

Choose the settings according to the format you need. Text that should become a readable paragraph usually needs spaces, while identifiers and other continuous strings may require a different approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I remove line breaks from text online?

Paste your text into the Original Text box, choose how you want line breaks replaced, and click Clean Text Now. Review the output and copy or download the result.

  2. How do I remove line breaks without joining words together?

Choose Replace with Space. This inserts a space where a line break is removed, helping prevent adjacent words from merging.

  3. Can I remove line breaks but keep paragraphs?

Yes. Enable Preserve Paragraphs when your input uses blank lines to separate paragraphs. The tool can then join lines within paragraphs while retaining those blank-line boundaries.

  4. Can I replace line breaks with commas?

Yes. Select Replace with Comma to insert a comma and a space between the lines processed by the tool.

  5. What happens if I remove all line breaks without adding spaces?

The text is joined without inserting a replacement character. This can be useful for continuous strings, but ordinary words may run together. Review the result before using it.

  6. Can I remove line breaks from copied PDF text?

Yes. Paste the extracted text into the tool and choose a suitable replacement mode. If the PDF introduces broken words or unusual reading order, you may need to correct those problems separately.

  7. Does this tool work with different line-ending formats?

The tool is designed to normalize common newline formats, including LF, CRLF, and CR, before processing the text. This helps handle text copied from different operating systems and applications.

  8. Can I download the cleaned text?

Yes. After processing the text, use Download .txt to save the result as a plain-text file.

  9. Will removing line breaks change my words?

The line-break replacement itself is intended to change line endings and their selected separators. However, optional settings such as sentence case, punctuation correction, HTML removal, and special-character removal can modify other parts of the text. Choose these settings carefully and review your output.

  10. Can this tool fix every formatting problem in a PDF?

No. It is designed to handle line breaks and selected text-cleaning tasks. It does not guarantee that missing characters, incorrect reading order, broken words, or every other PDF extraction problem will be corrected automatically.
